How to Set the Drag

Understanding Drag Fishing: How to Set Drag on Fishing Reels

Drag fishing is an essential technique in fishing that involves adjusting the drag on your fishing reel to prevent line breakage. It is particularly important when using a fishing rod and reel setup. By understanding drag fishing, you can enhance your fishing experience and avoid frustrating line breaks.

Setting Drag on Conventional Reels

Setting the drag on a spinning reel or spin-cast reel is simple. Begin by testing the drag by pulling the line directly above the reel using your hand. If the line pulls out too easily, tighten the drag by turning the front drag adjustment button a few clicks to the right. Conversely, if it feels too tight, loosen the drag by turning the crank a few clicks to the left. Closed-face spin cast models typically have a top-set roller drag adjustment mechanism. For more accurate force measurement, consider using a small spring scale, such as those used in Boca Grips or fish handling devices. Hold your rod at a 45-degree angle, hook the weight, and ensure the drag setting allows the line to hold a third to half of its weight before moving.

Setting Drag on Baitcaster Reels

Setting drag on bait caster reels follows the same principles as conventional reels. The only difference is the location of the drag adjustment mechanism, which is typically star-shaped and located next to the reel. To tighten the drag, turn it right, and to loosen it, turn it left. If you are using a braided fishing line, it is advisable to test the line by wrapping it a few times around the handle of your fishing pliers or a pencil instead of using your bare hands to avoid injury.
